The thermal
analysis laboratory houses the School’s general-purpose
thermal analysis equipment. Special-purpose instruments
are also available in several laboratories across
campus. Capabilities include thermogravimetric
analysis (to 1500° C), differential scanning
calorimetry (DSC) to 1500° C, simultaneous
TGA/DTA, and dilatometry to 1600° C. Collectively,
this equipment is used to measure a material’s
thermal stability; to monitor melting, crystallization,
and glass transitions; and to measure shrinkage
and thermal expansion. Students are permitted full
access to this equipment.
