Biomaterials Engineering (BE)
Bachelor of Science
Advanced materials are needed for biomedical applications. Implantable devices like pacemakers, defibrillators, and artificial joints must be biocompatible while carrying out complex chemical, mechanical, and electrical functions. Sensors used in medical diagnostics must recognize pathogens while ignoring a multitude of closely related molecules. Biomaterials Engineering (BE) is an interdisciplinary field that explores how materials interact with living organisims.
Created as a joint effort between the Division of Biology and the School of Engineering in 2003, the BE program at Alfred University provides students with a solid foundation in both materials science and cellular biology. As a student in our BE program, you'll be exposed to the field in your very first semester in our materials processing laboratory. Over the next four years, you will gain the expertise needed to solve real-world biomaterials problems through a blend of classroom and laboratory experiences. Your capstone experience will be a senior-thesis project - independent research conducted with a faculty advisor - on topics like anti-inflammatory bioactive glasses, ceramic orthopedic implants, and bone-healing materials.
